a king size bed

this one has been in the works for a while, and we delivered
it last thursday, just in time for mother's day weekend ...
fine figured mahogany from our friends at irion lumber

the obligatory 'before' shot
there were several conspt drawings, this one showing the top
of the plank below the lights
with a photoshopped concept sketch in the early going
more of these wide planks on irion's website .. i have
a 42 " one waiting to be shipped once we deliver
the 'stairway/ and around the corner' situation was EXTREMELY tight
so we did a test install ahead of finishing ..
another inch longer or wider and we wouldn't have made it

mocking it up in the shop with photoshop
color sample
it took some careful loading in the truck and the van to get it all there

love this shot going in the front door
trevor on the tail end ...
a fun and rewarding project!

a serious blast from the past

crazy one here!  we made this cabinet in 1989 and i personally delivered it to a building
called 'the studios', in new york, just off central park west.  a beautiful prewar building with
apartments designed, so i was told, as live in artist studios
they must have all been very successful artists as the whole building was beautiful!
click this one to see two pages from one of my pre digital portfolios
om that top center photo on the left, i am standing in front of a 7 foot high
carved marble fireplace ...
so, last friday, i received this photo in an email ... in the late 90's the original owner
moved to florida and took the cabinet with him ... in 2003, he sold the house with the cabinet included.  the new owners have lived happily with it since but have now recently
moved to VERMONT!  you can't make this up .. they have invited me to visit and i
certainly plan to do so soon ..can't wait to see it actually.
the new owner says that all the original correspondence came with the cabinet, and
surprisingly, i too found the original file and that is where the photos here came from ...
bill for the custom forged hardware
one of my very early employees, jeff
and another, who was still in high school, frank .. jeff was around i
think for about 7 years and frank for 12 years, starting when he was 17.
and here's will (seedersinstruments) standing in front of the unfinished cabinet .
he was 5 then, and i definitely remember the hat!
i've got a few other photos around somewhere ...

a wide board mahogany table

happy may day!
behold a beautiful piece of mahogany ... +/- 42" wide,
1.25" thick, a little less than 10 feet long, on one of our
steel shaker style bases ... it's for a summer boat house at lake george
so it has been in the works for a while .. spring is coming and now it is ready to go ...
cad drawing showing seating for 12
the listing from our friends at irion lumber
there are many more boards similar to this one there. in fact, i have
another one bought and paid for that looking for a new home
table? desk? headboard? we are using one 31 x 11' currently for a
king size headboard project
it's in the shop now ... more on that later

this is what they look like when they arrive
and after a little sanding, they look like this .. i kind of liked the bandsaw mark ghosts,
but i got voted down in favor of a little more formality
water jet cut and bronze powdercoated 'shaker' base, ready to install

more on the bed soon ...

just a few mirrors

i love a good mirror!  they can make a room bigger and brighter,
and more interesting, and also create interesting reflections and shadows.
and we have made quite a few of them .. we are working now with a client who
would like to do something 'a little interesting' in the mirror department.
and below are just a few we've done ... any wood combination or size possible
and we are open to new suggestions too ...
click the photos to enlarge them ...
when you sit in just the right place, the mirror becomes a 'third window' but i've never
been able to catch it just right in a photo .. mirrors are actually tricky to photograph.
same room as the first image, in my own house ..
crazy things can happen when these two interact.
with an abalone detail
we've done a few of these

and then there's your arts and crafts style

your round ones, with or without the convex (security) mirrors

                                                          you've got your carved details

                                                        your 'doorway' traditional style
your funky painted style ...

then you can combine any wood with any frame border,
above aluminum and brazilian rosewood veneer
in this case, cherry and black milk paint
and on and on

a cool retro fit

well ok, here's a good project ...
this client bought the table above at an auction as 'half of a table', 'several years ago'.
when we got it, it was three pieces, the top, the leaf, and the base below,
no hinges and no instructions.
so this was the base .. nice carvings! we didn't think much about the hole until after we made some
half size pieces of cardboard and tried to figure out where the pivot point for the main top was.
bingo!  the theoretical pivot point was somewhere in the hole!
so we filled in the hole and attached the top to the base with another circular 'plate' of wood
that was a little larger than the light colored circle in the picture above.
we could see a ghost of where the missing 'plate' rubbed when the top was swiveled.
worked perfectly ..
so then, luckily, we had two pairs of drop leaf table hinges on hand, and they
were the right size, but the original screw holes didn't line up.
patch the holes, attach the top .. good to go ...
an interesting repair ...
now if we can just find the mate to it, the client would have a nice dining table
