I showed some brief instructions for making for making Greene and Greene Style drawer pulls in a previous post and I just had my third request for the detailed instructions I mentioned there. So here they are for everybody. Please add your comments or improvements below. Most of the time the bit is covered by the workpiece, but a good enclosed fence would be a nice improvement. Click to enlarge for easier decoding. The last set we made we roughed out on the cnc ... see the photo of the test piece at the bottom ...
PS ... Looking at that bottom photo, it looks like the fluting bit we actually used was a 1" rather than a 3/4", though probably either would work ok ...
We can easily put multiple pulls on the same blank and
the process is more efficient, the cuts are cleaner, and it's probably a little safer.
Thanks for taking the time to post this!
ReplyDeleteIn the last pic you show the actual wood after routing, I assume you had "another" curved piece already in place on the router as the cut off was still on this one? I just want to understand that the length and curve of the piece attached to the router fence must match the radius of each different length of pull?
ReplyDeletei think you are correct pat ... since we now (very occasionally) make them on the cnc, it's been about 12 years since i made them with a router table, i don't remember exactly the steps. what you are suggesting makes sense to me. good luck! dan
ReplyDeleteHi-- Just saw this post. Hope the comment isn't to late. I've been a fan of Greene & Greene for awhile and just finished up a small cabinet/bookcase that completes the bedroom suite of G&G furniture that I built. I made the curved handles for the dresser without to much trouble if I remember correctly. Then I wanted to use the same handles on the cabinet. A longer piece of wood certainly helps makes routing less exciting for both the long and short pulls. I wasn't real particular about the radius this time -- I just tried to get one that "looked good" for the shorter handles. I've posted a few pictures in a google drive folder if someone wants to look at them. https://drive.google.com/open?id=17nXTNy-1CAy5DjyL652IlFqCpPOSbmec
ReplyDeleteThanks,
