We do this repair pretty often ... Broken bow .... We set it up so we can rout accurately with a small laminate trimmer, first the fromt usually, then the back, which is a little more complicated. we glue the repair pieces on as we rout. This bow was hickory and we had some ... Rout, glue, rout, glue, file trim, sand, color ... Will did this one and it went by so fast I didn't even get pictures of the intermediate steps... The chair was a worthy example though and it looked good when it was done ...
Broken
Front view finished ... A good save ..
Repair zones ... one side is usually longer than the other to (hopefully) eliminate new weak spots
Close up .... can't hardly tell ...
Hope you can do a followup with more details. Not sure I followed the part about routing, laminating, routing, etc. Do you mean you take out to nearly the middle and insert a piece and then when that dries you rout a slightly shallower area with a longer laminate and keep working to the top with a wide strip and then repeat the process on the back?
ReplyDeleteI enjoy following your blog. Keep up the good work and amazing projects.
HI ... if you blow up the sketch, check the top section drawing. the sequence is rout the patch on the front, glue in the patch; when it dries rout the patch on the back and when it dries, file them both, sand and color. Hope that helps ..dan
ReplyDeleteThanks for the followup. I did not realize the sketch would blow up larger. Makes sense now.
