a custom round dining table with 3 leaves

 

 we delivered this one recently

here it is on site

it is a 60" round with three 15" leaves, in cherry,

with an ebony and maple burl edge inlay ..

this photo shows the layout on the bottom of the table,

runners, stiffeners, and apron attachments.

the leaves, in the end, had center stiffeners not attached yet here

here we go again ... yet another round walnut dining table with leaves

we have made a big bunch of them in the last couple of years, 

and we never tire of the form .. this one is loosely based on a 

photo of a mid-century modern table, designer unknown, sent to us by 

our first client for this design back in 2014 ..

took the top picture with good and careful lighting, took the two

here with the leaves the next day 

when i was in a hurry and had to make room in the finish room

it's somewhere between the two ... with jus two of the leaves above ..

and with all three, with drop down legs here .. i doubt the client will ever use them, 

but i would hate big ancient aunt matilda to lean on the end of the table to get out 

of her seat ..

another round one

here we go again ... time to think up a name for this design ... i think this is the fourth or fifth

version of this design we have done .. in the early stages above, it's a 48" round and will have two 24" leaves.  the halves of the base will move as the top expands ..

the first one, in the picture at the top, was a 60" round with three 18" leaves

light stain, dark stain, black, natural .. lots of choices ...

gluing up the aprons here, which he angle cuts on the cnc after they set up ..

ready for aprons on the leaves and the angled apron cuts ..

ok .. the aprons are angled and the bottom edge of the top is beveled ..

a little sanding and scraping and we're ready for finish  ..

all done now ..

we've got a new version of out 'mid century modern' round expanding table heading for chicago next week.  we made the first table of this design a few years ago ...

this one is natural finish, with matched walnut from our friends at irion lumber ...

another round walnut table .. new pedestal design

one of our new clients came up with a concept for a variation on one of our tables that was really clever.

she asked if we could make this table we made in 2013 open to have 4' of leaves inserted. 

it seemed like it could work, so we made a model, which she accepted and we were off to new design land.

 

 all finished now, but these dark tables are tough to photograph

since we had made the model on the cnc from the cad drawing, it was a simple matter for trevor to cut some full size templates for the base pieces from mdf and lay them out on the 12/4 stock

the rest, as they say, was just an exercise .. cut the halves, cut the apron pieces, install the holes and pins and catches ... using our trusty jig
