lots going on ...

 lots going on so far this year .. 

we've got four projects wrapping up now.

one of them left for California yesterday and the 

live edge table left yesterday morning.

next up, a claro slab table with one of our classic steel bases

the bases are 1.5" thick steel, cut on a waterjet ...

  

the bottom needed some work and some steel reinforcement.

and the base pieces were ground, polished and patinated 

with a birchwood casey gun blue/black

 

the top had some cracks and we added some butterflies and epoxy fill ..

and today we delivered three more chairs to our long time friends

we made four for them in our two different styles

back in november  ...

 

hats off to kristian here !

 

they are 'thinking about' a new table in the future  

 

and below we are working on a reclaimed chestnut desk

for a long time local client ..

 

there is nothing easy about this one ..

 

 

we are using a 'stain, red paint, black paint finish that we 

often use on our painted windsor chairs

the two board sapele top will be a sanded version of that formula

next up ... a  bed with a live edge headboard ... 

off to visit with the clients tomorrow ... more after that ..

a claro walnut coffee table for sale

well ok, this one's just back from a gallery in great barrington ... they've had it long enough and now it's my turn to try and sell it ... it's of a generous size, about 45 x 55 x 18, but in the right space it will be really spectacular.  click the photos to enlarge them ...

Claro Walnut Table Progress

We're on the home stretch on the big claro walnut table now and I think the next time you see it, it will be completely finished... Below you can see we have gone over the surface with a sidelight and a curved scraper to get the biggest rough spots all smoothed out ... The grain in the area of the photo below was incredibly tough to smooth without chipping it out and we didn't/couldn't get every chipout. It still had a nice shine, even before the first seal coat of shellac ... Click the photos to enlarge them ...

We used a sidelight to find any big chipouts that needed final scraping and sanding
Even without the finish, sanded to 320, it had a good shine
Here's Sam polishing the 1.5" thick steel 'legs'... Tough stuff ...

A close up in process, before the final, final polish ... We went for a shiny but not mirror finish and the sealing oil in the photo above really brought it up nicely.

Getting the Big Walnut Table Together ..

We got the whole claro walnut table together for the first time today .... There's other stuff going on in the shop but I'll have to write about that later . We're off to see Iris DeMent in Middlebury in a couple of minutes ... click the photos to enlarge them ...
Here's the process ... We made jig for routing for half the base, routed inside that and then flipped it to complete the pocket ... The slab was too big and heavy to get upstairs to the cnc ... Anyway, it was dusty, but fine and the base is incredibly rigid ...

Flipped over .... with one of the ladderbacks from a November post that we're finally getting around to making ...
With some people for scale .... It's a big one .....
