lots going on ...

lots going on so far this year ..
we've got four projects wrapping up now.
one of them left for California yesterday and the
live edge table left yesterday morning.
one of our classic mid century modern tables ... more of them here
the cad drawing

before the finish ... finished photo coming soon ...

next up, a claro slab table with one of our classic steel bases
the bases are 1.5" thick steel, cut on a waterjet ...

the bottom needed some work and some steel reinforcement.

and the base pieces were ground, polished and patinated
with a birchwood casey gun blue/black
the top had some cracks and we added some butterflies and epoxy fill ..

the slab on the goodhope website
and today we delivered three more chairs to our long time friends
we made four for them in our two different styles
back in november  ...
hats off to kristian here !
they are 'thinking about' a new table in the future

and below we are working on a reclaimed chestnut desk
for a long time local client ..

there is nothing easy about this one ..

we are using a 'stain, red paint, black paint finish that we
often use on our painted windsor chairs
the two board sapele top will be a sanded version of that formula

next up ... a  bed with a live edge headboard ...
off to visit with the clients tomorrow ... more after that ..
a photoshopped mockup here
site visit today, drawings tomorrow ...

a few of my favorite things ...

conveniently listed on the home page of my blog
are, according to blogger, my 'popular posts' ...
the one at the top of that list has been viewed
more than 35,000 times, which does make it 'popular',
at least in my book.

below i list not my 'popular posts', but some of my 'favorite posts'.
ones that feature projects that i enjoyed writing about,
and/or feature projects that i am proud of.
here we go .... lots to read here ...

at the time i was writing this post i was also reading
a cormac mccarthy book titled 'all the pretty horses'.
hence the post title, which explains what that post is about ..

i could go on and on about this one,
and in the duck bed link above, i do ...

this was a rather miraculous repair if i do say so myself ...
we were able to get all the veneer pieces back to flat
without disturbing the original finish ..

at least 6 of them there ... one of them took
nearly a year from cutting the trees to installing it
on the upper east side in new york city ...
some big projects there ...

all claro, all the time
about a dozen live edge tables in the blog post at that link

a real, deep, head scratcher here ..
create the supports for a conical ceiling ...
here are the 'plans' from the architect
Ensure Slope Matches Side Wall Angle for Conical Ceiling'
at 2 and 1/16th x 12
and there is always the onsite variable where
the concrete wall on the right is maybe on 2 and 3/16ths x 12
instead of the required 2 and 1/16th x 12, which in
7' adds up!  crazy stuff !

a 1/8th" to the foot scale model ...
and your basic algebra here ...

and in 2010 we collaborated with a
at 20' x 8', this is the 'small one'
'small' because this one is 26' x 9'
about 2' of granite hangs out over the base pieces
we cnc'd and joined the knockdown parts,
we did the steel that supports the granite
and did the wood borders around the granite pieces ...
our friend steve did the finishing and onsite assembly.
                                                                             the crow bar  ... below
i think this will do it for today ...
more 'favorites' to come sometime ...

a live edge steel and cherry desk

we made this nice live edge cherry computer desk
for a long time friend of the family ...
the steel base spent a little testing time in sam's shop while we
worked on the slab top .. trigger approved it ...
there were two options, live edge up or live edge down ..
glad we ended up with the live edge up ...
the angled cut is the notch that felled the tree ...

cad drawing above
the design was loosely based on a pair of cherry
recording studio tables we made for a friend

a live edge, book matched elm slab table

our client purchased these bookmatched english elm
slabs from Berkshire Products in sheffield massachusetts
the table went to williamstown, mass, and now has a nice view
of mount greylock !
pretty nice pair
The steel base pieces are factory made and the client purchased them from a store in Pittsfield.
we picked them up on our way home from picking up the slabs

beautiful grain ...
there were two small bark inclusions that we filled with clear epoxe

with approximate dimensions

  •

great wood, great house, great location!

a live edge coffee table

we dropped off this fine piece of claro walnut

to a home on stratton mountain last week

a claro walnut slab from the 'specials' section of goodhope hardwoods

we cut it back to about 72" to go with the clients sectional sofa
it cleaned up very nicely and we routed the bottom for
a steel base by sam

ready to roll

is it october already?

well, here we are.  it's fall, and i see i haven't written anything since
the middle of the summer ... it might have something to do with the weather
and my golf and paddle tennis schedule .. lots of both,
but still Kristian and i are still getting lots of stuff out the door ...
below is a quick review of the last couple months ...
shortly after we completed the live edge table in the previous post,
the clients came with another slab from berkshire products, and another idea
the slab itself had some unusual bug damaged sections that the clients liked
that we decide to incorporate into the base for the breakfast table

a bit of a challenge, but successful we thought in the end

and, next up, a 60" round cherry table with three 15" leaves
a little flare on the inlay from the sunlight coming in the door
we have made this design many times in the past, but this is
the first time we made it with a moveable base as the table opens
in some ways simpler, and more stable
a little 'burl and bars' edge inlay to dress it up a bit

coincidentally, this remodel was to a house that we made furniture for
when this dining room was added on about 20 years ago ... those clients have
taken their furniture, and moved 'downtown' to the center of dorset ...

next we squeezed in some smaller things ...
a couple of bedside tables ...
cherry and curly maple, part of a series of smaller tables shown on our website
upper left corner there

and then a reclaimed chestnut 'kitchen desk'
legs and color to match a dining table that we made in 2007
 in the adjacent room
and below is one we finished last week
a spalted maple breakfast table, that at one time was a coffee table
that we made for a show and had managed to return to my office
where this client spotted it and had us make it into table for
a banquet in his new florida home.
solid 1" steel wishbone base waterjetted by mainly metals in bristol, vermont
and sanded and drilled, tapped and polished by kritsian

and finally, this base for a super bronze eagle sculpture by
walt matia, of curlew castings in maryland ... walt is sort of
world famous sculptor who has been a friend and fellow artist
since the early 80's
a couple of challenges:
* it had to be rugged as the sculpture weighs 150-200 pounds
* the inside had to accessible to bolt it to the floor on site and to bolt the sculpture to the base
* it had to be dark and 'not too shiny'

the sculpture this base will hold will a 'cut down' edition of this one
a photo shopped 'installation
if you've been to houston, you may have seen some of his bulls at the stadium there

i am sure i have missed a couple of other projects, but it is sunday
and time to go do some pottery ...
