a walnut dining table with leaves

a little update to this blog post i originally wrote back in may ... 

the client has finished the room and recently sent me these two extremely

lovely photos of the table on site.  we have done other projects with these clients

and they are ALWAYS appreciative, and a pleasure to work with ...

trevor and tyler put this one all together today .. the finish came out really nicely, 

and though there is a little red spot in the photo above, it is a reflection from 

the red walls in the finish room where we take our photos..

it is a dark finish, but not as dark as it looks in the top photo.  

the color in the photo above is closer to the real thing.

 below is the table before we disassembled it for finishing ...

we started with an inspiration photo from another client, 

and made the two models below to check the proportions in the drawing.  we ended up 

lightening the cross bars under the base, and minimizing the 'feet'.

here we go, laying out the boards for the top ...

trevor cuts the shapes for the top on the cnc. he also cuts the apron parts 

the same way and and joins them together with small dominoes, 

glue, and pocket screws top and bottom ..

as well as most of the other parts ...

lastly, the 'arcs' with their flat spots to glue to the central post,

and their dominoes for strength and alignment ..

testing the runners and the fit of the leaf before diassembling for
final sanding, staining and finishing.
good to go .. off to darien where it will hang out with a bed, and a kitchen
table we made for these clients in the past ... it is
always a pleasure to make multiple pieces for the same clients.

(yet another) round walnut table

here we go again ... yet another round walnut dining table with leaves

we have made a big bunch of them in the last couple of years, 

and we never tire of the form .. this one is loosely based on a 

photo of a mid-century modern table, designer unknown, sent to us by 

our first client for this design back in 2014 ..

took the top picture with good and careful lighting, took the two

here with the leaves the next day 

when i was in a hurry and had to make room in the finish room

it's somewhere between the two ... with jus two of the leaves above ..

and with all three, with drop down legs here .. i doubt the client will ever use them, 

but i would hate big ancient aunt matilda to lean on the end of the table to get out 

of her seat ..

one of our new clients came up with a concept for a variation on one of our tables that was really clever.

she asked if we could make this table we made in 2013 open to have 4' of leaves inserted. 

it seemed like it could work, so we made a model, which she accepted and we were off to new design land.

 

 all finished now, but these dark tables are tough to photograph

since we had made the model on the cnc from the cad drawing, it was a simple matter for trevor to cut some full size templates for the base pieces from mdf and lay them out on the 12/4 stock

the rest, as they say, was just an exercise .. cut the halves, cut the apron pieces, install the holes and pins and catches ... using our trusty jig
