coffee tables

i was working with a client recently who was looking for a spalted maple 

coffee table ... i had three pieces left from a log i bought from 

a local guy about 5 years ago.  we did a quick sand on them and

met with the client, who decided they were a little large for her ...

 i had these walnut legs from a previous table,  below,

bought by a client who had me change that table's legs to metal

 so when the current client selected another smaller slab, i finished up 

one of the three above and it is in the top two photos, ready to go ... about 23 x 64 x 16 high.

and then, as i cruise the shop, other possibilities appear, like the one above,

one of three irregular pieces of claro walnut, drops from recent tables we have made

the one above can go as is, or be made into an oval +/- 28 x 45, maybe a little larger ..

or this one could be a round coffee or center table, maybe 32" in diameter

and then a live edge table about 48" long by 30 to 34" wide

small dining or coffee table ..

also available is this 'and now for something completely different' white oak coffee table ..

the slab had some non removeable sticker burns which i had to paint somehow to hide.  

inspired by a david smith show at the clark art museum

it's been around for a while 

and can be seen, along with the one below at the ellenbogen gallery

in manchester, vermont, next to the price chopper ...

nice grain in this one

and the one above is in my office, but i'd be willing to part with it 

in order to make something new

and last, but not least, this is a piece of very highly figured claro

that would make an interesting console table with a metal base

and the grain running the short way, which is atypical ...

i remember this slab as having really spectacular figure.

an oval mahogany table

ok .. we finished this one a couple weeks ago, 

and it is leaving for chicago next week ....

the clients have been motorcycling in the southwest for the last month or so

it's one of our 'standard' (if theres i such a thing in custom woodworking)

center pedestal ovals ... they are fun and challenging and infinitely variable

this is probably the 7th or 8th version we have done

ribbon stripe mahogany ...
i cut the two glued up panels on the cnc and used the
negative shapes to glue up the two halves ...

there was no 12/4 ribbon stripe so i had to glue up some 8/4 for the base pieces,

and some 5/4 for the veritcal elements

the process is to miter them and glue up two halves as shown below

 looks a little dangerous maybe, but it actually doesn't seem too bad

add some dominos and pocket screws ...

 clamping the halves together can be a bit tricky and there

is some fussy final fitting involved to get a good joint in there

 add some low curves to the half lapped base pieces

 oh yeah, the oval aprons add a challenge

 headed out ot its new home soon ....

maple table, steel base

we finished a sweet maple table last week .. very minimal, clean design

steel base by sam, wood by irion lumber

two choices that boiled down to 'a little wider on the A end'

1.25" thick top, 1.25" square tubing

interesting mineral streaks in the bookmatched hard maple

going to try to shoot a better picture before it leaves ..

a reclaimed chestnut and steel dining table

we finished this one a while back, but we are going to use the base design
in a couple of new projects coming up soon ... 

the table base is essentially 2.5" square tubing, with welded caps on the bottom to
accept small adjustable levelers .. the original design was wood, but
the clients for the matched tables above wanted to incorporate some of sam's steel work.

we'll be making a curly maple table about 34 x 78, and probably at the same time,
 a base for this new mahogany plank that arrived recently from
our friends at irion lumber 
  ... +/- 42 x 120 .. and available .. will cut to suit

beginning of the smoothing process .. looks kind of cool like this, actually

a 74" round walnut table, with leaves

a 74" in diameter round table with 2 leaves ... the base is similar to the last racetrack 

shaped table we made back in may ..

here's tha cad drawing with gracious seating for 8 when closed and 12 when opened ...

as usual, we started with some matched walnut from our friends at irion lumber

 

myron said it 'would be close', and he wasn't kidding ...

we decided that since the base didn't expand we needed to add drop down legs 

for when the table is fully extended

we used some simple folding hardware from rockler

trevor, doing the testing ..

and with the leaves ... apologies for the photos .. the finish room was JAMMED,

and time was limited, and i was tired, and excuse, excuse, excuse .. 

i hope to get a good photo from the clients once it is in place on monday ...
