a 74" round walnut table, with leaves

a 74" in diameter round table with 2 leaves ... the base is similar to the last racetrack 

shaped table we made back in may ..

here's tha cad drawing with gracious seating for 8 when closed and 12 when opened ...

as usual, we started with some matched walnut from our friends at irion lumber

 

myron said it 'would be close', and he wasn't kidding ...

we decided that since the base didn't expand we needed to add drop down legs 

for when the table is fully extended

we used some simple folding hardware from rockler

trevor, doing the testing ..

and with the leaves ... apologies for the photos .. the finish room was JAMMED,

and time was limited, and i was tired, and excuse, excuse, excuse .. 

i hope to get a good photo from the clients once it is in place on monday ...

72" round, 2 18" leave ... below is the story ...

first, a couple of scale drawings of the table in the room

i am not sure what is going on in the marketplace, but this year has been one for us

just full of round walnut tables, with and without leaves, lots and lots of live edge 

tables, claro walnut and spalted maple mostly, 3 serious steel and walnut pool tables of the same design,   and other items involving steel in some form or another.  i'm not complaining mind you, in fact, i like

the mix ... i'm just curious why the mix isn't more broad.  must be google ...

so, here comes another round walnut table, at least the 5th this year ...six feet in diameter with 2 leaves,

to be followed shortly afterwards by another round walnut table, 60 inches in diameter, no leaves. ... 

go figure ... where are the desk, sideboard, and other case piece folks?

no worries ... here's the wood we got from irion lumber for the 72" round  ... some progress photos below ..

the base is veneered and the columns are cut to a rough shape.

they will be sanded up and the base should be all assembled tomorrow or wednesday.

 trevor cut the halves of the tops today .. waste not, want not ...

he cut it close with his glue up

the two halves of the top and the apron parts .. all cut on the cnc

the sub top, the equalized runners from rockler, and the leaves waiting to be cut and fitted.

4/5/15 ... we're in the process of adding a new design to our collection of expanding tables. 

this one was a collaboration between our client, who sent us photos and guided our sketching, and me, who did the drawings, and trevor, who made the models above.

we started out with the base splitting and separating with the leaves and then realized that

the whole concept would be easier to execute and would work better if the vertical base sections were at a 45 degree angle to the split in the table top.

there is a 3.5" square block in the center of the four verticals that was 

split on a 45 before the final glue up.

 

here are the four verticals with their braces glued on.  the joints are reinforced with dominoes.

another round dining table

trevors on the home stretch on this expanding wlanut dining table.  

it's another 60" round pedestal style table with leaves for expansion.

the clients placed the order while we were working on the mid century style table below, 

and the modifications to the design of the base we came up with together.

the model was helpful too ..
