a live edge walnut desk

we started with this slab from good hope hardwoods that
the designer selected from their website.
here's the cad drawing
we went back and forth on the finish for a bit, but settled on
a couple of coats of waterlox, which gave a nice matte finish.
the finished desk below

all in, all done .. i think it was installed by the designer yesterday

a live edge coffee table

we dropped off this fine piece of claro walnut

to a home on stratton mountain last week

a claro walnut slab from the 'specials' section of goodhope hardwoods

we cut it back to about 72" to go with the clients sectional sofa
it cleaned up very nicely and we routed the bottom for
a steel base by sam

ready to roll

to see more of our lived edge work over the years

an english walnut slab coffee table

this was a fun little project
it started with an english walnut slab from our other friends at goodhope hardwoods
coincidentally, we had this nice walnut base left over that we acquired when
a client bought a coffee table in on of our galleries, and
requested that we make a metal base instead of the wood one ..
perfect!
as you can see from the photos above, there were a few epoxy repairs required,
but in the end, the grain of the walnut was quite spectacular!

another view of the table in its new home, with better lighting
lookin good!

Another Claro Walnut Slab Table

well, OK … this semi retirement thing must be ok … after writing
many posts per month since November of 2007, I just noticed I
haven't posted anything since april … i'm still working, but I only need
a little work to keep myself out of trouble all week, and the nephew busy Tuesdays and Wednesday. I seem to be good for about 5 or 6 hours a day. in by 9:00, hour for lunch with a nap, off to the golf course or the tennis court by 3:30 or 4:00 ... it has been a great summer, and
the pressure is off of the marketing department …
work continues to roll in more or less at about the right pace …
here's one we finished back in june ..
the process was typical .. we have made about 50 of them ...
pictures and notes below.
the raw slab from goodhope hardwoods
adjust in photoshop to the clients dimensions and request for 'straightened edges'
the client requested a new design trestle steel base
made a new model with the new base design

sam whipped it up
while Kristian and I did a few repairs
and laid out the 'straightened edges with placemats
you can see the cuts in the photo with the green tape

all in, all done … out the door in early july

maple slab stuff

this project started out as just a table and i first mentioned it in a post back in january

when it was finished and delivered to a 3rd floor penthouse in the south,
i thought it would be good to have all the picturess in one post .. here goes ..

great figure in these maple slabs, and the client requested steel butterflies!
nice touch!
while the varnish was wet ...

simple steel tube base by sam ...
as you can see in the drawing below,  the butterflies we a little more
involved than usual with threaded rods going all the way through the slab

half inch thick, 3/8ths threaded stainless rods
that was the table .. how we got to build the desk was the first slab
arrived with a pretty good chunk lost on the way .. no one knows
where it went ... but my supplier got a damage credit and i got a
break on the price, and the client needed a desk ... win, win, win ...
we still got 90 inches out of it and room for two more steel butterflies
great figure in this one too ...

we went back and forth on the layout for the wire management
and the grommet and the drawer ...

all good in the end

i was making a bench for another client, and mentioned it and we added one of those too ...

in place
in transit .. crane to the the third floor
