it's that time again .. open studio weekend

ok, we have been doing open studio pretty much since the beginning, and this is the 22nd year that this event has taken place.  this year there are over 230 vermont artists and craftsfolks who will be cleaning their workspaces friday and emailing their neighbors to stop by this weekend.  as usual, we'll be open saturday and sunday from 10 to 5.  it looks like we could get some rain, which could be good, could be bad.  you never know.  if you haven't seen sam's new metal shop, this weekend would be a good time.  he'll be fishing on the rapid river in maine for the weekend, but kit or will or i will be happy to show you around.  kit will have her jewelery on display, and will will we be there at least in the afternoons to talk banjos.  come by if you can.

below are some links and photos from my earlier blog posts.
look for the yellow signs !!
i'll have a few small pieces for sale
and the shop will be pretty clean
unlike the 2010 open studio, mr. lucky will not be in attendance this year

open studio ... another year goes by

one more time .... every year, as i'm lugging stuff around the shop, i threaten to swear this event off, (it's almost 20 of those threats now), and every year, once we're all cleaned up and set up, i'm looking forward to it getting under way again ... it's a chance to catch up with the friends and neighbors who might not stop by if they know we're working, and a chance for the thousands of folks who come to vermont for the event to maybe stumble across our studio and buy or order something from one of us. lots of woodworkers come by, and sometimes, even mr. lucky stops by, and, well, that's always fun too. click the photos to enlarge them ...
look for the yellow signs ...
see the amazingly clean office
and the (almost) sawdust free workspace ...
this year we got some lucky free publicity in one of the local shoppers ...
and we have a few new versions of old pieces
and kit and penny get to hang out in the finish room for the weekend
with her paintings and kit's jewelry ... (rush photos here; much better in person ... )
gold wire and lots of precious stone beads
banjos 4, 2, and 1
and an expanding recycled chestnut table ready for finish next week
you can admire the freshly mowed the lawn and the freshly smoooothed driveway ... sam's steel lily in the foreground ...
and check out the mountain pinks (wild azaleas) down by the pond ...
and this year, due to our superior organization (hah) and early start, we even had time left at the end of the day for a beer .... just woke up from my nap ... bedtime now ... see you this weekend. if you're in town, come on by ... dan

Open Studio Weekend This Weekend

Come by and set a spell ...
It's Memorial Day Weekend again. Open Studio Weekend in Vermont, this coming Saturday and Sunday, 10-5 both days. Across Vermont hundreds of artists and craftspeople will be cleaning up and then opening their studios to their neighbors and visitors from out of state. It's the 17th year for this event and Kit will be here with her handmade jewelry and Penny Viscusi will be showing her landscape pastels, and I will be here at my shop with my stuff, old and new, both days. Sam will also be in and out and you may catch him and he can show you his metalwork. I plan to have a small number of pieces that have been on hand for a while offered at negotiable prices as I've got a ton of new ideas I want to explore, both furniture and in the sculptural mode I've been fooling with for the last year or so ... So come on by ... We're friendly ...

Open Studio Weekend

This weekend, May 24th and 25th was the 16th annual Vermont Open Studio Weekend. Almost 300 artists statewide opened their doors to the general public Saturday and Sunday from 10 to 5. At our studio there was lots to see. Kit will be showing her handmade jewelry, Penny Viscusi will again be hanging her local landscape and animal themed pastels, as always there will be some paintings by Horst Rodies, and this year for the first time, our son Sam will be on hand to talk about his metal work and our other son Will will be on hand working on an acoustic resonator guitar that he is building. I have several interesting projects in various stages of completion including some really nice Art Deco stlye pieces, (in the March posts below), a "Lotus" bed, (see post below), a bathroom vanity piece with some interesting turned legs, some funky slab wood tables, sculptures and, for the first time, framed prints of my pen and pencil drawings. Come on by if you're in the area. Within a mile or two, there are two other high end woodworkers, Steve Holman and Bill LaBerge, other blacksmiths, Jay Hathaway and Pat Quinn and potter Georgeanna Gay at Flower Brook Pottery.
