oversize tv, or, undersized cabinet ...

we've got a good project coming up ... two recycled chestnut cabinets and a new mantle, built around an existing stone fireplace ... the clients were interested in having a large flat screen tv pull out from the cabinet on the right ... a 46", larger, in fact, than would fit in a traditional 'head on installation. my friend, and, coincidentally, the audio/visual man on the job, kem verner, told me it was no problem to do this as the tv could go back into the cabinet on an angle ... hmmm.. why not? ..
the clients were serious, so i picked up one of the sanus tv brackets we typically use .. i first tried putting the wall for the tv bracket on an angle, thinking that would give me the most flexibility, but, in the end ...
kem suggested mounting the bracket on a vertical partition 90 degrees to the face of the cabinet and as close to the front as possible ... click the photos to enlarge them ..
in the end, this location gave us the most extension and smoothest in/out operation for the tv and the clients ( and i too) were able to see it would work ...
the vertical mdf on the left represents the retractable door in the closed position.
this photo shows the tv in the 'all the way out' location ... you can see in the photo below that the door, when it's retracted, will be behind the face of the stone and the tv will be out past it ... a slick solution ...

Clean House ... Back to the Big Tables

Quite a week .. In the last seven days we have delivered or shipped a total of fifteen (15) pieces.
The duck bed last Thursday, the big tv cabinet and two other pieces to the house in Grafton last Friday, a table and 6 chairs to the Southern Vermont Art Center for an upcoming show of New England Furniture Makers that opens next Saturday, two single beds and the recycled oak table to Martha's Vineyard, and today, last but certainly not the least, the big claro walnut slab table to Connecticut. ... I can't believe all that stuff was here at my shop at the same time ... I should have upped my insurance ... My mind is clear, the shop is empty (?) except for the 26' x 9' table and another dining table Will is working on, and I even got a round of golf in today .... Sam's in the metal shop working on a piece for another upcoming show at The Bennington Museum called 'State of Craft 2010' and the steel for the big table .... The steel granite supports for the big table ... Sam will tap them to bolt two to each of the seven sections and weld end plates on to finish them ... Rugged stuff ...
Almost forgot .. We had our first meeting at the shop yesterday afternoon for a sculpture we;re building at the Northshire Bookstore in Manchester to celebrate this year's Open Studio which takes place May 28th and 29th. Over 250 Vermont artists will open their studios to the public for the weekend .. I think it's the 17th annual and there will be a total of five artists represented at our studio here ... Kit with her jewelry, Dorset Custom Furniture woodworking, Sam and his metal work, Penny Viscusi with her pastels and Denise Tilley with her hand made totally cool hats ... More on that as the event approaches.

TV Cabinet Update

After last week, we're on the home stretch of the construction of the large tv cabinet we have been working on (See the previous post). This past week we fitted and hung the doors, made the moldings and the base and tomorrow we will attach the base and make the final adjustments to the doors and it will be ready for finishing ...

The ply frame for the base and the base face pieces on the cabinet break ... Normally we would make this first, but the way the carcase and end panels were configured, I wanted to fabricate and attach the end panels to be sure the projections of the base were correct ...
