Tapered Piece Update

Well ... we 'got er done' .... We finished the tapered pieces that we have been working on for the last month or so yesterday .... My shipper will be picking them up Monday morning to deliver them to their new home in downtown Philadelphia. We kind of knew as we were going along that these pieces were going to have a substantial presence when they were finished, but after we got the finish and the hardware on and set them up for the photos even we were a bit like, whoa! serious! .... They've got a really nice sense of balance and timelessness too, could go in a traditional or contemporary environment, and yet they don't seem to have any real historic direct decendants that I can place ... Egyptian? Biedermeier? Roman/Cretian? I don't know ... I can't really figure out why it all works .... I thank my clients for working with me on the designs, for embracing parts of our existing aesthetic and for having the faith that we could pull this project off .... All you need to know to build them is right here... The skinny pattern is a side view of the front element, the fat one is the front view of the same element, the solid wood sides are clipped to the ply structure and glued to the front tapered element, and the rest is just boxes, except for the base trim which was angled on a jig and run through the planer and attached to a box ... As they say, " There's nothing we do that can't be done by a 12 year old with ten years of practice ...."

A FIne Bedside table

A couple years ago we made a bed for a client that had, inlaid in the headboard, our interpretation of the family coat of arms. It was a challenging inlay with many different elements and woods finely executed by my man Trevor. It was one of his first really complex ones after he took over the CNC router operation. About now, he's definitely got it all figured out. Anyway, now he's working on a bedside table to complement his first project, plucking small elements out of the larger inlay and setting them a various places on the table ... Cool project ... We installed the steel sculpture today after a small algebra and arm waving exercise to get them centered and at the right height on the building. It looks right at home .... Click the photos to enlarge them ...

Back around Open Studio time in May, I made, painted and hung a sculpture on the wall of my shop. It generated some interest and I have now completed edition #3 of an edition of nine. They've all been different, the first is now in my office and available as an indoor wall mounted or free standing piece. The second in the series was a half size version for clients in New York City, and this, the third, is designed for outdoors. Plasma cut from 3/4" plate steel and mounted on substantial hinges, it is headed for a new barn in the Weston/Andover, Vt area. While we were working on it, I was a little unsure about the client's 'all the same color concept', but now that it's up, I really like it, and actually, the color unifies the design more than I expected .... The Search Feature on My Blog ...

Well, OK, I guess Google really is my friend. One of my human friends pointed out a feature on my blog that I was (after almost a year of writing it) totally unaware of. Up in the top left hand corner of the first page is a search box..... I never paid much attention to it. But while I was clicking through July and August unsuccessfully looking for the post we were talking about, he says "just put the title in the box up there and hit 'search Blog' ". Well, imagine that. So, if you're looking for posts related to "Greene and Greene" enter that in the box and all of those come up, or "Art Deco", or "Inlays", or 'Guitars', or whatever. I will never be lost on my own blog again. So, if the current post isn't interesting to you but you've got some other subject in mind ... Try the box ... Tapered Case Project

Most of the hardware is on .. (missing two long dangles on drawer case) ... Final sanding and finishing starts tomorrow ...

An update on the tapered cases shows the drawer faces and the doors veneereed with burl,edged with walnut and bordered with quartered cherry. The hardware is being 'blacked' and we're working on the proportions for the long dangles on the case 'columns'. Coincidentally, the second picture down shows three of the projects that are happening right now ... the tapered cases, a piece of the the concertina game table and the top of a new piece not yet posted, a macassar ebony Art Deco style cabinet with mother-of-pearl inlays. I'll be posting that one soon. Also, next up on the project list is a 'post and beam' pool table. Click the pictures to enlarge them

The doors are almost ready to glue up....We're patching a few defects in the burl veneers and they'll be good to go Monday.

11/11/08 update on case construction .... note models

We're underway on the 'New Design Project' , a post I started back in August ... We got some beautiful bubinga for the tops from Trade Winds in Grafton, Vermont and a really fine log of Pennsylvania cherry from Irion Lumber in Wellesville, PA. After finalizing the scale CAD drawings, we made a quick full size drawing, to which we made some small adjustments and started cutting. We will be working on both cases at the same time as the case work is similar except that one has doors and pull outs and the other, drawers. Stay tuned ... Click the pictures to enlarge them ...
